Garry Kasparov is a prominent Russian chess player, grandmaster, and World Champion who is considered to be among the best chess players of all times. He was born in 1963 in Baku and grew up learning to play chess and attending Botvinnik Classes led by a known Russian coach M. Makogonov who recognized the talent of the young child. When Garry was 12 he won the Chess National Junior Championship and a few years later he became the youngest ever chess player to qualify for the Soviet National Chess Championship. In the mid-1980s Kasparov became the youngest ever undisputed Chess Championship in the World, at the age of 22 years old. He held the title for almost 15 years which is also among the longest in history, losing it in 2000 to Vladimir Kramnik. For 5 more years, he continued taking part in numerous international competitions and winning the most of those. After his retirement in 2005, Kasparov became a political activist and even attempted to join the Presidential race in the late 2000s. He continues playing chess on the international level, occasionally, including the games with Wesley So, Fabiano Caruana, etc. Garry Kasparov is the chairman of the Human Rights Foundation and is the author of a number of books.
