Viswanathan Anand is a chess grandmaster from India who was the World Champion at the end of the 2000s. He was born in 1969 in a large town in Southern India and it was his mom who taught him playing chess. He received his higher education in Chennai and began his career as a professional chess player in the 1980s. He became the first chess grandmaster from India when he was only 19 years old. During the 1990s Anand participated in a number of international competitions and in 2000 he became the first Asian to win the FIDE World Championship. In 2007 he became No 1 chess player in the world, and then he repeatedly defended the title in his competition with Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov, and Boris Gelfand. However, in 2013 he lost the title to a young chess star Magnus Carlsen. For the beginning of 2019, Anand is rated No 9 by FIDE rating. He is a highly respected sportsman in India who takes part in a large number of events and charity-related projects. Viswanathan Anand has been married since 1996 and has a son named Ahkil.
